Well, I got two for ya over the past week.

Does your toddler have a sippy cup? They might be a terrorist. In short, woman (EX-SECRET SERVICE AGENT NO LESS) gets detained because her toddler had water in a sippy cup. Yes, the TSA is full of idiots.

Universe: Amherst

You know, there are times, very frequently, that I hate Amherst with every fiber of my being. Friday night was not one of them. I finally got my arse over to the Taste of Amherst, which, after living here for, oh 7 years, I finally did. Basically, it's all the food establishments in town set up on the Common and selling food samples wicked cheap. There's outdoor games like a rock climbing wall, and face painting, and some other artsy fartsy stuff. And live bands. Like this band Spouse. BP & I went over & met up with his boss from The Local Buzz who is wicked cool. Anyway we wandered around, ate some food, and watched 4-year-olds run around to Spouse. Normally I hate interacting with the locals, but this was OK. We saw some other friends of ours, and enjoyed some music. The "beer tent" closed at 10pm, so we didn't even get to drink. That in of itself wasn't annoying, but it is something I hate about this area in comparison to NYC. If I want a beer at 4am, I can get one in NYC. But anyway, I digress.

All in all, it was cool. And for a change, I didn't hate Amherst, or myself, or my life.

Beer Shortage?

The DUH!! Award for this week goes to this crap that says views towards sex depend on your relationship status. You know, I wish someone would do something interesting in science one of these days. I don't know why anyone would find this surprising or study-worthy. As a woman myself (and a woman from a scientific background) this is all common knowledge as far as I'm concerned. If you sleep around, and you're a female, you're a slut. If you're a guy, you're a stud. Why? It's because men rule the world and need some way to keep us down. Like making us wear high heels and long nails so we are completely useless and have to depend on them. Well, THIS RAMBO'S NOT BUYING IT!!!

Of much more importance (and worry!!) is the potential beer shortage!!! OK it's in South Africa, and it's due to glass not beer, but a beer shortage anywhere is a reminder to everyone everywhere - IT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU!

Finally, on a sad note, the Fury informed me that Mr. Wizard died today. Possibly the second-strongest reason I got into science (behind Doctor Who), it is a sad day for scientists and educators everywhere. You will be missed, Don. May the Iodine Clock never stop in Heaven.

Life: Weddings

Been out of town past few days. The Chick & AP finally (after 11 years exactly) tied the knot this past weekend and I got to wear uncomfortable shoes and too-long-nails all day to be a part of it. I'm just kidding - it was a blast. Chick looked awesome. Now having been through this for the second time it makes me want to do it myself even less, but that's just me personally. I guess if it's something you really want, hey man, go for it.

Anyway, I spent the weekend running around and sleep deprived so that's why no blog entries recently. I literally took a nap at work today during lunch.

JA found out that Vista's not really ripping off Mac OS X. Too bad, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

And, in some happier news, me being an enviro-hippie-polymer-scientist, polymers from spuds.

Personally I think all the work going on in biopolymers that are renewable and degradable is only a good thing. There's a lot of issues that need to be resolved - i.e. production costs need to come down (or petroleum needs to go way way up), some properties need to be improved, and more than anything, you hafta get people to want to change - but in the end it will be the way to go.
