So having just noted the visit of actual scientists to the Creationism museum, and having just watched Inherit The Wind, I am amused by the following - some smart person points out why the Bible is wrong: namely, everything was on the ark, even the dinosaurs. So why are they extinct? LOGIC FTW.

I am increasingly thinking there is something to the school of thought that as we have poisoned our environment, it is poisoning us. Phthalates may be causing pre-term births, nitrates may cause Alzheimer's, inbreeding is BAD (note to the South), and not sleeping is BAD particularly if you're an XX. I am a scientist, and I know what closed systems are - and things (ecosystems) develop in equilibrium with their surroundings. When that is disrupted... well, all hell breaks loose.
Somewhat related: The simpler, the better (sometimes) when it comes to childbirth. I hope all my breeding brethren find that of interest.
Of course, not all progress is bad. For example, vaccines. As I bitched about recently, there's no evidence they cause autism. and, there's a *reason* they are mandatory. Also, research shows how we might fight Alzheimer's. And, as someone born with a heart defect, this makes me happy.
Related to Alzheimer's: is there ANYTHING coffee can't fix?!.
Ahh, if only we had so little to worry about as the Netherlands.

Science Roundup 6/29/09 - Autism, Ulysses, Feminism
So now that I have Google Reader somewhat sorted, I can stay on top of more news than EVER! Which means, I can dig up more pointless crap to prattle about in my blog.
More studies that indicate autism is genetic. In other words, not caused by vaccines.
Rest in peace, Ulysses. The Ulysses solar orbitar is shutting down, after providing data about the far reaches of the solar system for almost 20 years. NASA, you done good on that one.
Leave it to UMass Amherst to show women are better at hammering nails than men. I mean, I know we're all pro-feminist up here, but this is getting a mite silly, no?

WE LIKE THE MOON
So, one of my favorite blogs, Nature's "The Great Beyond", has a great entry honoring India's moon mission. How could they NOT put up SPONGEMONKEYS??? I told them as much, let's see if they listen.

Beer Shortage?
The DUH!! Award for this week goes to this crap that says views towards sex depend on your relationship status. You know, I wish someone would do something interesting in science one of these days. I don't know why anyone would find this surprising or study-worthy. As a woman myself (and a woman from a scientific background) this is all common knowledge as far as I'm concerned. If you sleep around, and you're a female, you're a slut. If you're a guy, you're a stud. Why? It's because men rule the world and need some way to keep us down. Like making us wear high heels and long nails so we are completely useless and have to depend on them. Well, THIS RAMBO'S NOT BUYING IT!!!
Of much more importance (and worry!!) is the potential beer shortage!!! OK it's in South Africa, and it's due to glass not beer, but a beer shortage anywhere is a reminder to everyone everywhere - IT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU!
Finally, on a sad note, the Fury informed me that Mr. Wizard died today. Possibly the second-strongest reason I got into science (behind Doctor Who), it is a sad day for scientists and educators everywhere. You will be missed, Don. May the Iodine Clock never stop in Heaven.

Vista and Potatoes
JA found out that Vista's not really ripping off Mac OS X. Too bad, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
And, in some happier news, me being an enviro-hippie-polymer-scientist, polymers from spuds.
Personally I think all the work going on in biopolymers that are renewable and degradable is only a good thing. There's a lot of issues that need to be resolved - i.e. production costs need to come down (or petroleum needs to go way way up), some properties need to be improved, and more than anything, you hafta get people to want to change - but in the end it will be the way to go.
